Front page system for publication use-cases

Description

This is an old standing question for portals with a public side. The default view for sections is a folder listing, which is definitely not satisfying for a web site. There is of course the possibility to use CPSWebPublisher, but this isn't suitable for portals that have both the collaborative (workspaces) and publication use-cases. In this situation, one easy solution that has been adopted by many sites is to enhance the !Section document type with content fields and widgets, akin to what can be found in !Document.

A more powerful approach would be to select a document from the section to serve as a front page. This has some definitive advantages:

  • flexibility : one could for instance select documents of different types for front page (e.g an ImageGallery? for some section, a Document for most of the others...)
  • versioning : the front page being an published document like any other one, one can republish it, add language revisions, etc. This is more collaborative than having a SectionManager edit the section, for instance.

This has been already done for one of the sites I maintain, with the technical solution of a dedicated portlet in content_well. The drawback is that setting the front page requires at least some minimal knowledge of the portlets editor. I think that a simple widget on the section edit form to choose the front page would be more usable (changing portlets and/or theme page is still possible for more advanced users), but that also requires changing the folder_view template

This is something I need very shortly (trunk only). I'm still not fully decided whether this should be a separate product, separate profile of CPSDefault, or just standard (CPSDefault with base profile).

This is going to be a separate profile of CPSDefault. Technically, the rendering will still be a portlet, but Workspace and Section will bear a new layout for display options and the portlet will react to that.

This compromise will still allow to tweak in the portlets editor and stay consistent with anterior choices (folder listing and heading are already done by portlets) while user-level information (choice of front page) will be in the folder edit form.

  • Milestone changed from CPS 3.5.0 to CPS 3.5.1

Will integrate this after 3.5.0 (already done in one of my custom projects). Catalog problem raised in #886 is still relevant, maybe will have to disable indexing of front pages in sections, but that's a freaking hack.

The work done for this site has been merged as is in CPSDefault (changeset b2e8b5470ce9). This has been pushed to mercurial.racinet.org.

Remaining work to be done on this topic:

  • keep and sync an attribute on the front page proxy telling whether it's used as a front page
  • index this attribute to filter out front pages from searches (at UI level only of course)
  • provide nice actions (edit front page) and user-feedback ("this is a front page")

  • Status changed from new to closed
  • Resolution set to fixed

These last enhancements are postponed till 3.5.2 in the new #2195
